Card Sharp Reprint is up at Lightspeed

I have been traveling lately, so I’ve been remiss in reporting that Lightspeed has reprinted my story, “Card Sharp,” in their latest issue (August 2019). They will be publishing the third story in the sequence, “All In,” in September, so now all three stories are available on the Lightspeed website. They don’t need to be read in order, but all three tell one extended arc. The stories and links are:

  1. Card Sharp
  2. Second Hand
  3. All In (link forthcoming)
Let the updates begin (starting with a new Card Sharp story!)

As usual, it’s been a long time since I posted here. And as usual, a lot has happened in the interim, so it’s a good excuse to dust off the blog and mention the most recent events.

One of the big writer items is that I sold a story to Lightspeed Magazine. “All In” is the third story in my Card Sharp series of weird western short stories, after “Card Sharp” and “Second Hand” and wraps up that storyline. I don’t know when the story will go up on the site, but I will update this site and shout about it on social media when I know more.

Working with the Lightspeed team is always a pleasure and I’m happy that I get to finish this series of stories (for now — there may be more down the road).

“Card Sharp” available online again

I just wanted to pass on that one of my older stories, “Card Sharp”, is available to read online, for free, at the Way of the Wizard website. For a while it was only available in audio version (still available at Podcastle). Judging by the feedback I’ve received, this is one of my most popular stories, so if you’d like to check it out, you have your pick of versions.

There may be another story in the sequence coming soon…

Dead Man’s Hand Anthology

DeadMansHand_rough-1

I am thrilled to see that editor John Joseph Adams announced Dead Man’s Hand, a weird western anthology coming from Titan Books. My story, “Second Hand,” will be in the anthology, a continuation of the story begun in my Way of the Wizard story, “Card Sharp.”

I am even more excited to see all the amazing and talented writers who I’m sharing a TOC with. I have no idea how I ended up in this one to be honest. (Jeffrey Ford! Tad Williams!).

it’s not out for another year, but I can’t wait to see it in its finished form.

Also, I may be writing a related novel to the story in this one…

“Card Sharp” on British Fantasy Award Long List

I apologize to my Facebook and Twitter friends who have seen this already, but I found out last night that my story, “Card Sharp”, from The Way of the Wizard anthology, made the British Fantasy Award long list, or their recommendations as they call it. And while I didn’t make the cut to the short list, I’m happy that someone liked the story well enough to nominate it for an award. This story seems to be the most popular one I’ve written so far, so I feel good that there are more related projects in the works.

The list also includes The Way of the Wizard anthology, edited by John Joseph Adams, and the story “Tethered” by fellow Altered Fluid member Mercurio D. Rivera.

And since I have the excuse, I should mention that “Card Sharp” is still available to read for free online at The Way of the Wizard site as well as being available in podcast form at Podcastle.
