Let the updates begin (starting with a new Card Sharp story!)

As usual, it’s been a long time since I posted here. And as usual, a lot has happened in the interim, so it’s a good excuse to dust off the blog and mention the most recent events.

One of the big writer items is that I sold a story to Lightspeed Magazine. “All In” is the third story in my Card Sharp series of weird western short stories, after “Card Sharp” and “Second Hand” and wraps up that storyline. I don’t know when the story will go up on the site, but I will update this site and shout about it on social media when I know more.

Working with the Lightspeed team is always a pleasure and I’m happy that I get to finish this series of stories (for now — there may be more down the road).

Second Hand News

I haven’t seen it, but I got word this weekend that Wired magazine featured Lightspeed Magazine’s podcast as the Staff Pick for science fiction podcasts in their July issue. As part of that they picked a standout episode and the one they picked was my story, “Second Hand.” Lightspeed publishes so many great stories that I’m really chuffed that Wired singled out my story. Thanks to the folks at Brilliance Audio for putting together the narration. If you’d like to check out the podcast, you can listen to the narration here.

I guess I really should get to work on more stories in that universe, shouldn’t I…

New Story: Quantum Entanglement at Daily Science Fiction

2013-01

Back to me again. My story, “Quantum Entanglement” which went out to Daily Science Fiction subscribers last week is now available to read, for free, on the internet. Having a story appear in January is such a great start to the year.

Hope you enjoy it!

The Sounds of Old Earth

I’m often aware that I spend way too much web space on self-promotion here. Which is why I’m happy to shine the spotlight on others when I can. Today I’d like to direct you to the story, “The Sounds of Old Earth” by Matthew Kressel, recently posted on the Lightspeed Magazine website. Matt’s in my writing group and we critiqued this story in the group. It started out as a great story, but Matt’s revisions took it into extraordinary territory. I think it might be the best thing he’s written (so far). I’m truly impressed by the power he managed to imbue into it. I would encourage everyone to read it if you haven’t already and please, if you’re part of the science fiction and fantasy community, don’t forget this story come awards season. It’s just that good.

Two Podcasts

I just wanted to take a moment to mention two podasts that I’m proud of.

First, I narrated “The Metal Men of Mars” by Joe R. Lansdale for Wired.com. The story is the first in Under the Moons of Mars, edited by John Joseph Adams.

Second, my story, “The Last Gorgon”, which was published in Beneath Ceaseless Skies last month is now available as a podcast. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, maybe you’d prefer to listen to it?

I also have a few other narrations in the works which I’ll mention when they go live.
